Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
